Pamphlet, 8vo, sewn, later paper spine, 21 pp. Signatures on front wrapper and title, chip on corner of back wrapper, normal aging and browning; a very good copy. In February and March of 1750, London was rocked by earthquakes. This work, which is attributed to Joseph Besse, the Quaker writer, is a response to the Bishop of London's comments on the recent earthquakes. He seems to take exception to the bishop's notion that the earthquakes were a wake up call to get people to back on the right path. The bishop apparently blamed the earthquakes on the sinfulness of man. The author of this work found that to be arrogant to assume an understanding of perhaps divine events. He felt we didn't need a bishop or profit tell inform people they were sinners. Jenkins in his listing of this pamphlet indicates that it contains some scientific reflection in the work, and there is some historical commentary on earthquakes too. Jenkins 1991.
