(Sir Walter Scott), Complete in Three Volumes, Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London & Archibald Contable and Co., Edinburgh, 1820, 3/4 leather, 7.5 x 5 , 12mo. In good condition. Light wear to extremities with minor scuffing to edges and corners. Spines desiccated and abraded with flaking and peeling of leather. Corners bumped to boards with slight loss of leather at tips. Tooled motif along edges of tips and leather boards. Marbled wrappers scuffed slightly with rubbing at centers. Light toning to appearance of volumes. Non-archival tape repair to front fly off Volume II. Light dampness staining at top edges of Volume III, not affecting text. Light toning throughout each volume with minor instances of foxing. Free of known markings or ownership. Joints somewhat tender. Bindings intact. Please see photos. A true triple-decker, a fashionable form of publishing in 19th century. First edition of Sir Walter Scott s (1771-1832) novel. Many of his works are considered classics, and he had a major impact on European and American literature. His knowledge of history and literary facility equipped him to establish the historical genre as an exemplar of European Romanticism. Triple-deckers was a standard form of publishing for British fiction and was significant in the development of the modern novel.
