Imperial folio. Boards, cloth spine. Portfolio covers and front and rear guard sheets for Part II only, no plates. Covers separating, about very good condition. Covers of natural history works issued in parts were generally discarded. In this case, done as boards, it would have been unfeasible to bind the covers in with the plates. A fantastic artifact; such a rare survival shows how the set was vended and distributed. The portfolio has a lithographic illustration on the front board and lists fifteen species. Printed price on face of 3 guineas. Publication of this work went on from 1849 to 1861. This particular part was issued in 1851, and, as it happens, Gould's work was displayed at the Great Exhibition in that year. Gould was back in the news in 2021, when an archival copy with unpublished drawings was saved from breaking up by a public subscription in the United Kingdom.
