Charles guerlin DE guer - et Arthur marye qui - m'ont aidé de leurs conseils, MM. Gast, Gautier, Brion, Esnault, Ronchin, Gallier, eleves-maitres à l'école normale de Caen, qui ont bien voulu mettre à ma disposition leur connaissance des parlers des environs de Caen, de Bayeux, de Falaise, de Lisieux, de pon't-i'évéqne et.de Vire. Si mes histoires ont quelque saveur locale, c'est à mes jeunes collaborateurs qu'elles le doivent engrande partie. Et pour les défendre auprès de ceux qui trouveraient à y signaler_certaines expressions comme étrangères aux patois du Calvados, je me contenterai de rappeler qu'un patois quelconque, s'il est vivant, s'enrichit sans cesse de vocables empruntés à la ville, à la'caserne, aux j_ournaux et aux chansons; qu'il y a, dans un même patois, des façons de s'exprimer particulières à tel ou tel individu enfin, que le meilleur moyen je dirais volontiers, si je ne craignais d'étre pédant, la seule méthode scientifique d'étudier un patois consiste, non pas à consulter des glossaires, ni même sa propre expérience qui est toujours - plus ou moins incomplète, mais à constater fidèlenzenl l'usage aclnel.
