Original albumen photograph by C.W.J. Johnson (5 " x 8 1/4") mounted on heavy cardstock (7" x 10") with rounded corners. Light spotting and wear. This early photograph is a classic view of historic Monterey overlooking the Bay. In May, 1770, Pedro Fages arrived in Monterey; an engineer in his party selected the site of the presidio and drew the first plans and maps, becoming one of a series of presidios, or "royal forts," built by Spain. Today, the fort is the home of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLI-FLC). It is the last and only Presidio in California to have an active military installation. C. W. J. Johnson (1833-1903) arrived in California during the Gold Rush. After living in Feather River, Grass Valley (1863), and Nevada (1868), he moved to Eureka where he opened a photographic business with William N. Tuttle. In 1881, he settled in Monterey, becoming the Hotel del Monte's first official photographer from the mid1880s to the late 1890s, and operated a gallery on Alvarado Street from 1881-1898 in downtown Monterey.
