The Moon Beneath Us (Paperback or Softback)

Beth Harris has spent her life trying to prove she belongs in rooms built for people with more money, more certainty, and fewer reasons to fail.
At sixteen, she has finally won her way to Luna City, the shining human settlement on the Moon, through an elite youth science programme. Her father has sold equipment from his struggling workshop to help her get there. Her mother died before she could see what Beth might become. Beth arrives determined to be brilliant, useful, and impossible to ignore.
Then, on her first day, she sees an airlock fail.
The official system says everything is safe. Beth’s modified AR glasses show the truth: the readings are delayed, the latch has not sealed, and a maintenance worker is seconds from disaster. Beth breaks protocol and stops the cycle, saving a life but attracting the attention of Director Cael Voss, a man who believes Luna City survives only through discipline, secrecy, and control.
The airlock fault is only the beginning.
Beth and three other gifted students begin seeing signals inside the city’s systems. Don Carter, a young flight-systems expert, treats danger with jokes until the danger becomes too real. Amy Tanaka, a bioengineering prodigy, hears trouble in the rhythm of oxygen pumps before alarms sound. Anya Volkov, a precise and guarded cryptographer, recognises that the symbols appearing across their devices are not random. They are language.
The trail leads beneath Luna City, below the polished towers, farms, transit rings, and Council chambers, to a hidden alien structure older than human settlement on the Moon. There, Beth and her friends discover the terrible truth. Luna City was built on top of an ancient stabilisation grid that helps hold the Earth-Moon system in balance. The city has been using that support without understanding it. Every new tower, farm, pressure system, and family has added load to something already damaged.
The grid is waking.
It is not asking for worship. It is not offering easy answers. It is giving rules: air, balance, debt, trust. It shows Beth what adults have hidden and what fear has already cost. Voss once saw Earth military pressure nearly take Luna City from civilian hands, and that trauma hardened into a belief that only secrecy can protect the city. But his secrecy has trapped everyone inside a false version of safety.
As quakes spread, oxygen systems destabilise, and the Council turns the teenagers into suspects, Beth must decide what courage really means. It is not proving that she is the smartest person in the room. It is not breaking every rule because authority can be wrong. It is learning when to trust others, when to stop, when to speak, and when to make the truth public even when powerful people demand silence.
