Mooring at the Millrace

Mooring at the Millrace is a book of true stories about adversity and love. Readers say, "It is touching, encouraging, engaging, moving, wonderful, funny, sad, inspiring, priceless, and a must-read. It has a James Herriot vib and a Brigadoon feel. Susan leads us through her own life and makes it easier to find our way through our personal history."

As the author, and a twice-divorced marriage and family therapist, I invite you to share my story. My idyllic childhood, in a safe, happy family and community, ill-prepared me for the real world. I think many of us were in that boat. I want my grandchildren (8), great-grandchildren (6), and yours to read stories of what family, community, faith, trust, quiet, simplicity, and hope used to be. The world in which we grew up is gone. I believe people of my age who are still alive owe it to the next generations to leave a record of the "way it was." I have tried to tell the joys and the misery, the delights and the discouragements. It wasn't all better. But it was a significantly more ethical and moral era. It was less hateful and divisive.

Come back in time with me. I have heard from readers that this story helps them remember the values they inherited, the people on whose shoulders they ride, and moments from their "good old days." As James Baldwin wrote, "If you know whence you came, there is really no limit on where you can go." And Barbra Streisand sang, "I remember what happiness was. Let the memory live again." The main takeaway from this book is that Love Heals.
