About this Item
A scarce edition of this work written by Jean Ingelow, which has been called an 'early feminist fairy tale', intended for young readers. Including the scarce original dust wrapper. Presenting this charming fairy tale by noted English writer Jean Ingelow. Much like the stories of other Victorian writers Lewis Carroll and George MacDonald, this work departs from the typical fairy tale tropes and traditions in order to convey more contemporary ideals. This work has been called an 'early feminist fairy tale', because the characters exude female power in the face of more traditional fairy tale conventions.Originally published in 1869 and written by English children's author Jean Ingelow (1820-1897).The fifth edition of this work, published by Wells, Gardner, Darton, & Co., a scarce edition.Containing eight full page illustrated plates, collated and complete. Also containing a prize bookplate to the front pastedown from P.M.C. Birmingham Street, Harlesowen, dated 1928. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Slight fading to the cloth to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper has some loss to the head and tail of the spine, as well as a small amount of loss to the fold of the front wrap. Some light chipping and edgewear present to the extremities and some light shelf wear. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, hinges strained but firm. Binding is generally firm. Spotting to the fore-edge, affecting the odd page, which are otherwise generally bright and clean. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 799J16
