Moral Philosophy: Including Theoretical And Practical Ethics by Joseph Haven provides a comprehensive, systematic treatment of moral philosophy distinguished by its division into theoretical ethics and practical ethics. Haven sets out to establish a science of morals rather than a narrow survey of moral topics, beginning with fundamental questions about the nature and ground of right, the rule and province of right, and the faculties that cognize moral distinctions. The work proceeds to a thorough analysis of duties to self, society, property, slavery, and the state, and culminates in a treatment of duties to God, including reverence, love, obedience, and worship. Throughout, Haven engages major theoretical options—utility, law, divine command, and the eternal nature of right—and emphasizes the role of natural and revealed religion as sources of moral knowledge. The text also traces the history of ethical opinion and incorporates a Preface, a Historic Sketch, and extensive discussion of political and social ethics, with notable attention to education, conscience, and the moral responsibilities of citizens and rulers. A foundational work for 19th?century moral philosophy and ethical instruction.
