vi, 174 p. 17 cm. Full leather. Front board nearly detached. About half of spine extant. Worn. Endpapers soiled. Half of rear free endpaper missing. Ink signature on Contents page from Napanee 1831. Pencil signature on rear endpaper from 1844. Some spotting, thumbing, and pencil marks within. Murray was author of the "Swiss Emigrants." In this critical text he discusses: different species of fiction; epic poetry such as Homer or Milton; romances of chivalry; French writers like Fenelon, le Sage, Rousseau, Voltaire, Genlis: English writers such as Richardson, Fielding, Smollet; German writers like Schiller and Goethe; ludicrous texts like Don Quixote; "descriptive" works like Mrs. Radcliffe; etc.
