Mormonism : An Address (Classic Reprint)

This edition presents a deliberately forceful argument about the structure and influence of Mormonism in Utah. It outlines how church and state are intertwined and why reformers believe polygamy poses a national moral and legal challenge. The text mixes historical description with a strategy for persuasion, using religious, educational, and political steps to push for change.

Readers gain a snapshot of the debates that surrounded Mormon practices in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the roles of missionaries, courts, and public opinion. The work argues that moral forces and civic institutions should lead the effort to address polygamy, while respecting religious liberty and the rule of law.

• Insights into the organizational structure the author attributes to the church in Utah.

• Discussion of the social and legal implications of polygamy on families and communities.

• Strategies proposed for public education, press activity, and congressional action.

• A historical perspective on the tensions between religion and government in reform efforts.

Ideal for readers of American religious history, social reform, and policy debates surrounding religion and law.
