William Jay (1769-1853) had a long and fruitful career as a preacher of the Gospel by voice and pen. He pastured Argyl Chapel in Bath, a spa town in southwest England, from 1791 to the year of his death more than six decades. He was close to most of the evangelical leadership of the area. It is natural to see him as a link between the days of the orginal evangelical revival and England's nearest approach to second great awakening, the decade 1855-1865, that saw the first years of Spurgeon's amazing London-based ministry.
