Mornings With Mama, Dialogues on Scripture. Old (New) Testament Series

Mornings With Mama, Dialogues On Scripture. Old (New) Testament Series by Amelia Gillespie Smyth. This juvenile devotional presents Scripture study as a sequence of intimate conversations between a mother and her child, Mary, guiding young readers through the Old Testament. Using questions, answers, and practical reflections, the book surveys the histories of Samuel, David, Solomon, and the kings, explaining events, moral dilemmas, and divine judgments in accessible language. Its aim is to attract young readers to Scripture, foster personal piety, and illuminate Christ’s fulfillment of Old Testament types. The text emphasizes obedience over sacrifice, sincere repentance, and reliance on God’s providence, while contrasting genuine virtue with misguided zeal. Chapters address David and Jonathan, the rise and fall of Saul, the temple’s dedication, the reforming reigns of Hezekiah and Josiah, and the eventual judgment on the northern and southern kingdoms. The work combines narrative, dialogue, and devotional commentary to nurture faith, moral discernment, and a devotional habit in youth.
