David Roberts was a Scotsman, born in Edinburgh in 1796, and became an accomplished landscape painter. He was admitted into the Royal Academy in 1841. Roberts travelled extensively throughout The Holy Land, Egypt and The Middle East between the years 1838-40, where he made many beautiful and detailed drawing and sketches of the many places and scenes he travelled through and witnessed. Between 1842 and 1849, Roberts worked tirelessly with lithographer Louis Haghe to produce the wonderful and lavishly illustrated 'Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria', and the 'Egypt and Nubia' series. Egypt and her surrounding countries were very much in vogue during this time, therefore Roberts could fund his work by advanced subscriptions. Queen Victoria was his first subscriber. Print size: 24 x 35 mm Lithograph with additional later colouring. Good condition. Slight foxing. Text below and verso. Seller Inventory # 65581
