[1954] signed and inscribed first edition, Harper and Brothers (New York), 7 1/8 x 8 1/2 inches tall pictorial cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, silver lettering to spine, pictorial endpapers, primarily black-and-white reproductions of photographs, unpaginated, [89] pp. Slight rubbing and moderate edgewear to covers, expecially lower edges and tips. Very light staining to the lower margins of the first few (mainly textual) pages. On the half title page, nicely inscribed and signed by American photographer Nell Dorr (1893-1988) to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, with museum stamps to the top margin (the only indication of institutional ownership). Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a slightly soiled and edgeworn dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~II~ [2.0P] The most popular of the half dozen books by well regarded American photographer Nell Dorr (1893-1988), who experimented with a range of photographic techniques including the photogram, macrophotography, negative retouching, and alternative printing processes. During the Second World War, Dorr took up residence in New Hampshire with her daughters and grandchildren whom she photographed extensively. The resultant images were complied in Mother and Child, the exhibition and publication of which was prompted by her grief over the death of her daughter, Elizabeth. The work was featured in MoMA's 1955 world-touring exhibition The Family of Man, for which four of her images were selected by Edward Steichen.
