René Daumal's cult classic is a visionary literary quest that blends adventure, philosophy, mysticism, and allegory into one of the twentieth century's most unusual novels.
In Mount Analogue, a group of explorers sets sail aboard the yacht Impossible in search of a hidden mountain that, while physically real, remains invisible to ordinary perception. Rising from Earth toward heaven, Mount Analogue represents a path to higher understanding, a bridge between the material and spiritual worlds.
What begins as an expedition soon becomes a meditation on knowledge, consciousness, and the lifelong pursuit of truth. Through vivid symbolism, wit, and imagination, Daumal transforms a mountaineering adventure into a profound exploration of human potential and the disciplines required for inner growth.
Left unfinished at the author's death, Mount Analogue has become a landmark of modern philosophical fiction and a touchstone for readers drawn to surrealism, esoteric thought, and visionary literature. More than seven decades after its creation, this remarkable novel continues to challenge, inspire, and reward each new ascent.
“Keep your eye fixed on the way to the top, but don't forget to look right in front of you. The last step depends on the first. Don't think you're there just because you see the summit. Watch your footing, be sure of the next step, but don't let that distract you from the highest goal. The first step depends on the last.” ―René Daumal

About the Author
René Daumal (1908–1944) was a French poet, novelist, essayist, and translator whose work combined literary experimentation with philosophical and spiritual inquiry. A founder of the influential avant-garde movement and journal Le Grand Jeu, he drew inspiration from poetry, metaphysics, Eastern thought, and the teachings of G. I. Gurdjieff. Though he died at just thirty-six, Daumal left a lasting mark on twentieth-century literature through works including A Night of Serious Drinking and his unfinished masterpiece, Mount Analogue, a cult classic that continues to inspire readers, writers, artists, and seekers around the world.
