YA-Originally published in 1990, this expanded and updated second edition covers over 550 categories. The book does not provide encapsulated reviews, nor does it critique films. What it does is arrange them into different categories. The classifications are logical, and the entries are readable and fun. Each one falls into two parts, the first of which is a narrative description of the category and the second is a chronological list of representative films. Some of the different headings include such gems as "Body Switching," "Chainsaws," "Multiple Roles," "Popes and Cardinals," and "Slasher Movies." "See also" references abound. An excellent tool for film students who are trying to pull together similar titles or just for fun.

The Armstrongs' update of their earlier collection (LJ 5/15/90) serves as a film buff's guide to the film world, focusing on English language (and significant international) sound films, television movies, series, and characters. Each of the 500 entries includes a short informative narrative followed by a list of films and release dates; however, cross references would have been a helpful feature. Specialists might argue over some exclusions, but overall each entry is comprehensive within the proscribed bounds. Although there are some overlaps with Daniel Lopez's excellent guide, Films by Genre (McFarland, 1993), the book contains many unique and useful subject headings (e.g., "Child Custody Disputes"). Recommended for most film collections.
