Andy Hargreaves was born, raised, and went to school and university in the North of England. He is now a research professor at Boston College, a visiting professor at the University of Ottawa, and holds visiting professorships at Hong Kong University, the University of Stavanger, and Swansea University. He is past president of the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement, served as adviser in education to the First Minister of Scotland, and from 2016-2018 advised the premier of Ontario, Canada. Andy is founder and president of ARC Education, a group of nations committed to broadly defined excellence, equity, well-being, inclusion, democracy, and human rights.
Andy's writing, research, and public advocacy focuses on equity, educational change, school improvement, collaborative professionalism, sustainable leadership, and learning and teaching to bring about a better world.
Andy is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has consulted with the OECD, the World Bank, governments, universities, and professional associations worldwide. He is ranked in the top 20 scholars with the most influence on the US education policy debate. He holds awards for services to public education from the Scottish government and from the Horace Mann League in the United States. He has given keynote addresses in more than 50 countries, 47 US states, and all Australian states and Canadian provinces. He was given the Canadian Whitworth Award in 2000 for distinguished contributions to educational research. Andy's more than 30 books have attracted multiple Outstanding Writing Awards, including the highest-value and most prestigious Grawemeyer Award. In 2015, Boston College gave him its Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award. He holds honorary doctorates from the Education University of Hong Kong and the University of Uppsala in Sweden.
