Wells' attempt to make sense of World War I. It begins with a lighthearted account of an American visiting England for the first time, but the outbreak of war changes everything. Day by day, Wells chronicles the unfolding events and public reaction as witnessed by the inhabitants of one huse in rural Essex. Each of the characterrs tries in a different way to keep their bearings in a world suddenly changed beyond recognition. The book was published in 1916 while the ware was still inprogress, so no clear resolution was possible. Wells did not know how long the war would last or which side would ultimately win, but he hoped that somehow, something good might eventually come of it." - review by goodreads dot com. "A British family is caught up in WWI. Wells spent time on this book, and it [is] well worth the read. One of his lost classics buried under his fantasy novels. The wartime conditions were experienced first hand by Wells and the weaving of personal experience with fictional narrative elevates the work far beyond newer works on the subject." - review by Aric at goodreads dot com. "This is a wonderful jumble - part domestic novel, part philosophy, part rather profound musings on war and peace. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am now a little in love with HGW, like, it seems, many women before me." - review by Lauren at goodreads dot com. Seller Inventory # 004328
