Mr. Punch's Dramatic Sequels

Among the parodies are follow-ups to works such as Shakespeare’s "Hamlet" and "The Merchant of Venice" as well as Ibsen’s "A Doll’s House." In Hankin's hands, Hamlet’s indecisiveness or Nora’s radical departure becomes a point of critique and humor, as the sequels explore the real-world consequences of these characters’ dramatic choices. These comedies highlight the dramatic intensity and sometimes implausible nature of the originals, pointing out how such intense, poetic resolutions would play out in a more realistic, often humorous light. Hankin uses these sequels to question the moral and philosophical ideas embedded in the original plays. In Shakespearean sequels, for instance, he humorously examines how Hamlet’s existentialism and Lear’s tragedy might appear in a mundane, post-dramatic world. By exploring these continuations, Hankin brings attention to the rigidity and sometimes impracticality of the original dramas, emphasizing the gulf between high-stakes theatrical resolutions and everyday life.
