About the Author
Evan S. Connell est né le 17 août 1924 à Kansas City, dans le Missouri. En 1943, il interrompt ses études de médecine pour s'engager dans la Navy et devenir pilote. En 1959, il publie son premier roman, Mrs. Bridge, qu'il dédie à sa sœur et qui connaît un succès considérable. Il s'attelle ensuite à l'écriture d'un roman partiellement autobiographique sur une jeune recrue dans la Navy et d'un recueil de poèmes. En 1969, il marie Mrs. Bridge à Mr. Bridge, ce dernier connaissant lui aussi un très grand succès. Les deux romans seront adaptés au cinéma en 1990 par James Ivory avec Paul Newman et Joanne Woodward dans le rôle des époux Bridge.
Malgré cette reconnaissance, Evan Connell mène une vie solitaire, quasi-recluse, et reste inconnu du grand public. Et s'il continue d'écrire, il assure son quotidien frugal en devenant tour à tour facteur, employé du gaz ou conseiller dans une agence pour l'emploi. En 2009, il est nommé au Man Booker Prize pour l'ensemble de son œuvre et reçoit le Robert Kirsh Award décerné par le Los Angeles Times en 2010. Evan Connell s'est éteint le 10 janvier 2013, à Santa Fe.
