Two menu cookbooks celebrating simple American-style food. Witty is the author of Fancy Pastry ( LJ 5/15/86) and coauthor, with Elizabeth S. Colchie, of Better Than Store-Bought ( LJ 5/15/79). Her very chatty book features lots of comfort food organized into categories such as "A Dinner To Ask a Person To." Her collection of homey recipes could serve as an antidote to some of the overly trendy cookbooks out there. McLaughlin's recipes are more sophisticated than Witty's, but his menus also are designed for casual entertaining. Along with classics like choucroute and potato gratin are dishes such as Cornmeal Fettucine with Quail and Shiitake that reflect the author's background as a contributing writer to Julee Rosso and others' The Silver Palate Cookbook ( LJ 6/15/82); some personal favorites, some interesting ideas, a few creations that seem a bit too esoteric. Both these books are timely and likely to be popular.
