M?tis Rising: Beading M?tis Identity and Constitutional Rights

At once bound by and beyond the constitution, Métis peoples occupy an unstable position in Canadian law. While scholars debate the scope of Métis constitutional rights, reconciliation cannot be achieved without confronting indigenous experiences with colonization. In Bead by Bead, contributors unpack the ongoing denial of Métis land, resource, and sovereignty claims under Canadian law. Yvonne Boyer is a Michif with her Métis ancestral roots in the Red River. She was the associate director of the Centre for Health Law, Policy and Ethics, and part-time professor of law, at the University of Ottawa. Appointed to the Senate in 2018, she is the author of Moving Aboriginal Health Forward: Discarding Canada’s Legal Barriers.

Larry Chartrand is a citizen of the Métis Nation (Michif), professor emeritus in the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa, and the author of Métis Treaties in Canada: Past Realities and Present Promise.
