Multidirectional Memory in Comics / Multidirektionales Erinnern Im Comic

Comics are no stranger to a multitude of historical truths; they are by nature a multidirectional genre.
Memorializing the Holocaust and colonial violence should teach the present about past atrocities lest history repeat itself. And yet, these two forms of remembrance culture frequently compete for public attention and other scarce resources. Michal Rothberg's ethics of "multidirectional memory" aims to overcome this competition by means of dialogue and intersectional recognition.
Comics are particularly well placed to chart the overlaps and pitfalls of collective memory. For one, images are often more readily comprehensible than text. More importantly, though, the spatial plane of the comics page-in which several panels are visible at once-liberates the reader from the sequential order of language. Present, past and future, and the slippages between them, appear side by side, reminding us of the implicit contradictions in narratives of self-understanding.
