This volume provides the first book historical exploration of multilingual print culture in early modern Europe, examining multilingual editions, collections and corpuses to illuminate this fascinating and understudied aspect of the early modern book world. Its contributors examine multilingual print in the realms of education and language learning, scholarship and university culture, drama, official print and news, offering nine case studies of multilingual print across the continent and three comparative surveys. What emerges is a picture of multilingual print culture which was thoroughly integrated into early modern society as well as being a defining characteristic of the early modern book trade.

Chloe Akers-Brewer is a PhD student at the University of St Andrews and Research Assistant for the Universal Short Title Catalogue. She has published on various types of early modern printed ephemera and is interested in print, ritual and celebration.

Andrew Pettegree CBE, FBA, is Professor of Modern History at the University of St Andrews and Founding Director of the Universal Short Title Catalogue. He is the author of seventeen books in the fields of Reformation history and the history of communication.

Arthur der Weduwen is Lecturer at the University of St Andrews and Co-Director of the Universal Short Title Catalogue. He is the author of seven books: his latest is The Last Invasion of England: 1688 and the Dutch Armada (Princeton UP, 2026).
