Towards Multiple Applications Of Porphyrinoids: The Colored Molecules Of Life (Series on Chemistry, Energy and the Environment)

This book was written with the main purpose of describing the many real and potential applications of porphyrinoids, the two most important of which are those which can be used in industrial processes and those brought to the market for medical use. The properties of porphyrins and related tetrapyrroles have been described, limited admittedly, since antiquity. Hemes and chlorophyll derivatives have been used as dyes and pigments. Porphyrinoids dyes are authorized for use in the food industry. The contributions in this book are organized around five key themes, Health, Environment, Biomimetic Catalysts, Renewable Energy and Innovative Materials, which will bring together the current applications of porphyrinoids for many users.

Karl M Kadish is Professor Emeritus in Chemistry at the University of Houston and before that held the position of Distinguished University Professor and Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen University Professor. He received his PhD from Pennsylvania State University in 1970 after which he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of New Orleans and a Charge de Recherche at the University of Paris VI before beginning his independent academic career in 1972. Dr Kadish's research interests are in analytical chemistry, porphyrin chemistry, chemistry and electrochemistry of biological compounds, redox reactions of metal complexes, spectroelectrochemistry and fullerene chemistry. He has published over 660 research papers and edited or co-edited more than 100 books. Dr Kadish has been the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines since 2003 and has served as President of the Society of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines (SPP) since 2000.

Roger Guilard is a Professor of Chemistry at the Université de Bourgogne Europe in France. He received his PhD from the University of Dijon and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Basel and Darmstadt. He has been the recipient of the Coordination Chemistry Award from the French Chemical Society and two Awards from the French Academy of Sciences. He received the "Grand Prix de l'Académie des Sciences", "Prix Gaz de France" in 2001 and "Robert Burns Woodward Career Award in Porphyrin Chemistry" in 2010. He received the "Grand Prix Emile Yungfleisch de l'Académie des Sciences" in 2013.
