Gr 4-7-A well-written, easy-to-understand description of a debilitating disease that affects about 350,000 people in the United States. While its cause is unknown and the condition cannot be prevented, drugs can reduce the severity of attacks. Susman explains in simple yet accurate language how multiple sclerosis attacks the central nervous system. He addresses symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as research therapies such as artificial myelin and beta-interferon. What will strike readers the most, though, are the first-person narratives that describe the sudden onset, pain, and weakness caused by the disease. Addresses of organizations dedicated to researching multiple sclerosis are included in the back matter.-Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY
