Add to basketDramatic engraving of the murder of David Rizzio (the central fallen figure, held by two assailants with drawn sabers), in the presence of Mary Queen of Scots (just to the right, being restrained by an armoured man). "Rizzio rose to become the private secretary of Mary Queen of Scots. Mary's husband, Lord Darnley, is said to have been jealous of their friendship because of rumours that Rizzio had impregnated Mary, and he joined in a conspiracy of Protestant nobles to murder him" (source: Wikipedia). Handcoloured etching and engraving, sheet size 600 x 445 mm. Made by Isaac Taylor of Ongar after John Opie, published by John and Josiah Boydell in 1791. Isaac Taylor of Ongar (1759-1829) was an English engraver and writer of children's books. John Opie (1761-1807) was an English historical and portrait painter. He painted many of the Greats of his time, including several members of the British Royal Family. In fair condition, cropped within platemark and mounted on canvas. Pinholes in all four corners. Surface soiling throughout, as well as small spots of surface damage. Edges uneven, with tiny nicks and creases.
