Just outside Ashford village, in legend-haunted Hammershire County, there is a megalithic structure called the Goblins' Playground. Located deep in Red Cap Woods, it has long been the site of weird events, from pagan rites to human sacrifice by secret devil cults. When local rowdy Allan Cutter staggers into the snug bar of the Three Crowns pub and dies, old fears that have lain dormant for ages come to the fore. His death is quickly followed by the murder of a developer who planned to raze Red Cap Woods. Villagers believe dark powers are awakening, that the murderous elves reputed to dwell in the woods will again dip their caps in human blood. Into this maelstrom of fear and emotion come DCI Arthur Ravyn and DS Leo Stark. As the bodies continue to mount, they discover it will take all their combined skills, intellect and courage to solve the mysterious deaths, keep the villagers from panicking, and not get sacked by powers even more inimical than those lurking in the eldritch depths of Red Cap Woods.

About the Author

Ralph E. Vaughan is the author of several Sherlock Holmes novels and stories, notably The Adventure of the Ancient Gods, the first-ever crossover between the literary worlds of Holmes and Lovecraft. He is the creator of the popular Paws & Claws YA mystery/adventure series, in which three amazing canine detectives fight injustice, oppose oppression and occasionally save the world. Among his science fiction books are Shadows Against the Empire and Amidst Dark Satanic Mills, interplanetary steampunk adventures set in the late 19th Century. A writer since the Sixties, he has published more than 300 short stories, some of which are included in "Beneath Strange Stars," a collection of tales from more than forty years of writing. An expert on fantasy writer HP Lovecraft, he authored the authoritative HP Lovecraft in the Comics, a survey and analysis of how Lovecraft's stories were interpreted in graphic print formats through the 20th Century. He is a long-time resident of Chula Vista, California, leaving his hometown only long enough to serve as an Army photojournalist. He is married and has two children, a daughter who is a game designer, playwright and director, and a son who is a conductor for the BNSF railway system.
