When the 20-year-old daughter of vaudeville star Lillie Langtry turns up dead at the bottom of the Black Precipice on Mount Monadnock in the summer of 1910, the local police call it an accident, but residents of the Halfway House hotel are not so sure. They call on Robert de La Tour, a retired Boston detective and his brother, Eugene, a newspaper reporter, to investigate. Their investigation takes them to Pumpelly Cave, the Dublin Art Colony and the Halfway House hotel where they meet famous people like Mark Twain and not-yet-famous people like Franklin Roosevelt and Robert Frost.
