About the Authors
Dr Melanie Coathup is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, College of Medicine, at the University of Central Florida. She is also Lead of the Biionix (Bionic Implants, Materials, & Interfaces) Cluster. In 2023, Dr Coathup was inducted as a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. She is Editor of the book Musculoskeletal Infection published by Springer Nature in 2021. Dr Coathup's research is focused on orthopaedic innovation with the view of applying scientific discovery to improve the treatment and care of patients. Her research focuses on developing novel antibacterial products, as well as advancing novel biomaterials, and small molecule therapeutics that boost bone repair when under challenging and complex physiological conditions. This includes aging, infection, ionizing radiation-induced injury, and bone health when in space.
Dr Mehdi Razavi is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Central Florida, where he has been a faculty member since 2019. He is a member of the Biionix (Bionic Materials, Implants & Interfaces) Cluster and holds secondary joint appointments in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering as well as the Biomedical Engineering program within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Dr Razavi's interdisciplinary research integrates biomaterials science, nanomedicine, musculoskeletal tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine with advanced biomanufacturing techniques and targeted drug and gene delivery systems.
Dr Thomas J Kean is an Assistant Professor in the Biionix Cluster at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. His research lies at the intersection of regenerative medicine, biomaterials, and targeted therapeutics, with a particular focus on musculoskeletal tissue engineering. Dr Kean's current research focuses on developing regenerative therapies for osteoarthritis, with a particular emphasis on enhancing anabolic activity in cartilage tissue. His work explores innovative strategies in musculoskeletal tissue engineering, including the use of biomaterials and stem cell-based approaches to stimulate cartilage repair and regeneration. His interdisciplinary work bridges fundamental science and translational applications, contributing to the advancement of tissue repair strategies and precision medicine. Dr Kean is also an active collaborator and mentor, committed to fostering innovation and interdisciplinary research in biomedical engineering.
Dr Aadil Mumith is a fellowship trained specialist knee surgeon. He undertook his postgraduate training in the UK and Canada. During his orthopaedic training he gained a highly coveted Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng) Research Fellowship and was awarded competitive grants from the Enid Linder & Arthritis Trust, Orthopaedic Research UK and Skeletal Cancer Action Trust for his work. He was awarded a Biomedical Engineering PhD for his research based at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. After completing his training in the UK and gaining his FRCS(Tr&Orth) from the RCSEng, Dr Mumith was named as a Lower Extremity Reconstruction Fellow under the Schatzker Joint Preservation Initiative at the University of Toronto and gained many notable awards. He went on to complete a second fellowship in arthroscopic (key-hole) and reconstructive surgery at the renowned Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, UK where he began his consultant career. As a result of being trained by world-class experts, Dr Mumith is able to provide a highly specialist reconstructive service as part of the acclaimed Knee Unit based at Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital in the UK, a European centre of excellence. Dr Mumith is also an Assistant Professor at the College of Medicine, University of Central Florida. Alongside his clinical work, he continues research in his area of expertise, is an editor of several texts and convenor/faculty on numerous courses.
Dr Liza Osagie-Clouard, named as one of London's best concierge doctors, Dr Osagie-Clouard is an award-winning orthopaedic surgeon who trained in both New York and London. Her PhD was in advanced research into the use of stem cells for healing, which prompted her passion for harnessing science and art to achieve true modern wellbeing.
