Publisher's original green cloth with spine and front panel lettering gilt and bird on limb front panel decoration, quarto, pp. 430. Tissue-guarded frontis and black and white illustrations throughout. Top edge gilt. Painstakingly collated and found perfect with the long "List of Illustrations." Shelf rubbing and wear at spine ends and board tips. Front hinge tender; rear hinge showing the beginnings of weakness. In search of a precise citation for this edition, we consulted three separate David MacLean reference works: (1) Gene Stratton-Porter: A Bibliography and Collector's Guide; (2) Gene Stratton Porter: A Book Collector's Guide; and (3) Gene Stratton-Porter: A Short Biography and Collector's Guide to First Editions, as well as "Gene Stratton-Porter: Novelist and Naturalist," the Judith Long biography. The binding of this copy would seem to be a Variant of a Variant, to wit, the "C binding," which calls for the "Doubleday, Page" imprint on the spine. This copy matches Variant C in all respects except the presence of that spine imprint.
