12mo, 188 x 120 mms., pp. xvi, 212, engraved leaf of Beethoven's music, after page 196, original pink wrappers bound in at end, contemporary cloth, spine repaired with magic tape; several leaves sprung, all missing before title-page, covers a little soiled. The Musical World was founded by Novello in 1836 and continued publication until 1891. In 1844 James William Davison became the owner of the journal which he edited until his death in 1885. There is an amusing letter to the editor on page 61 from a counter-tenor: "Permit me to draw your attention to the situation in which myself and a few others, who have the misfortune of being denominated 'counter-tenor singers,' are places, by the introduction of female contraltos at most of the festivals and concerts, instead of the legitimate altos: for instance, not one of us is engaged at the forthcoming festival at Exeter Hall - as in many of the barbarous countries, the work of the men is to be done by the women" The letters is signed "A in ALt.".
