Myopia and Nearwork

Myopia is the technical term for short sightedness. It means that images of distant objects are focused in front of the retina when accommodation is relaxed and thus distance vision is blurred. Many texts describe the measurement of refractive error in myopia and how to correct it by conventional means, but very few discuss the condition in detail. Our book will discuss:

prevalence
myopia and near visual activity
structure of myopic eyes
animal studies
accommodation and myopia
innervation
vergence and myopia
treatment - behavioural approaches, control, spectacles, contact lenses, including OrthoK, laser surgery.

* Unique text explores the relationship between near vision and myopia written by
an authoritative group of experts sharing their views in this long-awaited unique compilation of data.
* The book will appeal to all who are perplexed by the issue of myopia and nearwork either in terms of appreciating the diversity of research findings or by the management of questions commonly asked in the consulting room.
* Essential for all students and practitioners whether they are optometrists or ophthalmologists requiring a thorough understanding of myopia

"[A] splendid text... An extensive literature is embraced, as shown by the series of references for each chapter. Optometrists, with the care of pre registration students, and local groups in need of some gently controversial subjects, would do well to use this book as the basis for helpful discussions." Professor Robert Fletcher, Optometry Today, November 1998
