The Mysticism of Plato, Or, Sincerity Rested Upon Reality by J.P. Potter

The Mysticism Of Plato, Or, Sincerity Rested Upon Reality By J.P. Potter is a historically informed critique that investigates how Platonic mysticism influenced early Christian thought, particularly the Logos as presented in St. John. The work contrasts the Platonic and orthodox interpretations, arguing that the philosophical mysticism of Plato served as a forerunner to, and was transformed into, a personal and doctrinal reality within Christian orthodoxy. Through extensive examination of internal and external testimonies, the author contends that the orthodox doctrine did not arise straightforwardly from Plato, yet that the Platonic vocabulary and ideas shaped the Christian Logos in meaningful ways. The text advocates truth, reason, and sincerity as foundations for religious conviction, urging gradual reform in the church to align faith with reality and usefulness. It emphasizes the responsibility of scholars, clergy, and lay readers to pursue conviction through evidence, to reduce error without destroying piety, and to foster a catholic, educated piety rooted in truth.
