S. editions) that lays out the importance of Fremont's exploration for settlement of disputes between the United States and England over Oregon. The volume is bound in 3/4 brown calf over tan cloth; five raised bands and black leather title patch; gilt-ruled and decorated spine; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt. The book is clean and tight with several small spots on the leather; pages are uniformly lightly toned. Name of previous owner, "James Bentley" written on first blank page, with his bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper. Two old archivally repaired 3" tears on the map, with some associated light soiling; otherwise the map is clean. A nice copy of this "must-have" item for the serious collector of Western Americana.
