[vi]+392+[2](advertisements); limp red cloth, spine lettered in gilt and decorated in black, boards lettered and decorated in black, slightly canted and lightly soiled, edges a trifle rubbed and bruised, the spine cloth faded and slightly bubbled; endpapers faintly offset, hinges starting at a couple of points, a little light foxing; Smith, Elder & Co., London, 1907. New edition, reprinted. Coustillas A7.3g. *First published in three volumes, in 1889, followed by a single volume edition dated 1890 (but published in December 1889). From 1890 to 1907, Smith, Elder issued several reprints of their single-volume edition of The Nether World, usually in two formats: the pictorial boards commonly known as yellowbacks, and in red cloth. Over time yellowbacks became less popular. 'Of the 1903 reprint (A7.3f) not more than 8 copies were bound in pictorial boards - yellowbacks were out of favour with the public in those days' [Coustillas p. 79]. All copies of the 1907 reprint were bound in cloth.
