One-page letter from Campbell McKee & Co., a New Orleans-based commodities supplier, to a potential client concerning pricing in 1859 for tobacco and other goods. The supplier reported there were limited requests for better grades of rich heavy tobacco leaf and tobacco prices ranged from 5 cents to 10 cents. "A general feeling of distress is evinced by the sparing manner in which buyers take hold, and we regret to report the continuance of a dull and unsatisfactory market," the report states. However, they hoped to see markets expand in Spain. According to the report, corn had declined but flour "has been in better request" and advancing in price on all grades, along with pork, lard, and groceries. However, bacon was "without animation" and prices were firm. The 8 1/2" x 11" copy letter is on light blue onion-skin paper with creasing and a horizontal split through the middle. There is also a small amount of wear along the right edge.
