Appleton's Journal, numbering 135 manuscript pages, far exceeded Polk's forty-page allowance and afterwards became separated from the presidental diary. Generations of historians have had but this scanty knowledge of the existence of Appleton's rare and illuminating account of Polk's wartime travels north for Union. Now, for the first time, Appleton's Journal is presented to the public, and its publication is accompanied by a generous selection of Polk's correspondence detailing advance preparations for his presidential tour."
