Title-page printed in red and black. pp(2)/(12)492/(2) including single blank preliminary & final leaves; with engraved title-page device, head- & tailpieces and decorated initial capitals, one engraved plate, and one folding chart. Original robust full speckled calf. Spine with five raised bands, gilt decorations, gilt title on black leather label and gilt volume number in compartment below. Boards with gilt-decorated edges. Original endpapers. Front hinge split from head to foot, though still secure; rear hinge lightly rubbed, with short splits at head and foot. Rear board with flattened blob of hardened cream wax-like substance of diameter up to 15mm adjacent to rubbed & pitted patch of the same size; board surfaces otherwise lightly rubbed. Board edges lightly rubbed, gilt decorations dull; outer corners lightly rubbed, upper outer corner of rear also curled and lower outer corner slightly so. Endpapers lightly dust- & handling-marked, and adhesive-stained along outer edges; front endpapers split along hinge, doodle in old hand on flyleaf. Title-page lightly toned and lightly dust- & handling-marked towards edges; with minor doodle towards fore-edge, three manuscript letters adjacent to corresponding printed letters in publisher details, and minor doodle and red manuscript number '100' at side of publisher details - none of which overlapping print, all but the '100' in old hand. First four leaves of preface faintly toned at edges. Some fairly minor worm damage on just 8 leaves, with here & there some associated faint soiling:- pages 227/228 with hole of diameter up to 3mm in lower margins, (plus light soiling on page 227 well away from print) / pages 277-280 with trail of length 15mm and width up to 4mm in upper margins, affecting just single letters in headings on pages 277, 278 & 279; (plus lengthy steep & narrow pale smudge from trail on pages 278 & 279, and patch of light soiling in lower margin of page 279) / pages 327-332 with trail of length 10mm and width up to 3mm slightly affecting print adjacent to inner margins of pages 328-331, close to which on pages 329/330 only a hole of diameter up to 3mm affecting print on both pages; trail of length 12mm and width up to just over 1mm in lower margins; two small holes in upper margins and two at lower edges of pages 327/328 only; (plus steep & narrow pale smudges, around which some light & sparse spotting and patches of light dustiness, on pages 328 & 329 only) / pages 491/492 with trail of length 10mm and width up to 2mm close to lower edge / blank final leaf with trail of length 4mm and width up to just over 1mm close to lower edge, (plus lengthy sharp diagonal crease from lower edge to upper outer corner, and much shorter & lighter creases across upper outer corner). Two leaves holed, not by worm:- pages 417/418 at lower edge well away from print, and pages 451/452 in 'Table des Quarrez Parfaits' where triangular hole of height 15mm and width up to 5mm affecting four 7- & 8-digit numbers on both pages. Pages 424 & 425 lightly soiled, again in form of lengthy pale smudges, around which some light spotting & dustiness. Marbled edges of text-block toned, top edge most deeply so.
