Inspired by a True Event

A short story full of compassion and heart about a young Métis farmworker joining a Ukrainian boy’s family.
---
When Gordon Gordey was eight-years-old, his carefree farm boy childhood was about to be snatched away. His dad badly injured his back in a haying incident. Gordon fears the family’s seasonal help, Henry, will leave the farm to hitchhike out for new work.

Henry does leave but it is to search for the “Old Man”.

What follows is a touching story of a young Métis man, a Cree Indian healer, the power of the sweat lodge, and a heartfelt coming together to rebound from life’s setbacks. This story is inspired by a true event and re-inspired in this work of fiction.

Young readers and those who enjoy connecting with this 1950s era of resilient rural life will be swept up by the compassion of this short story’s endearing characters.
