Complete game with 44 playing colour photographic playing cards and 44 reading cards, cards measure 8.1 x 6cm and are presented in their original pictorial card box (17 x 13 x 3.2cm) with an interpretive booklet ( [5] + 25 + [1]pp, 12.3 x 9.3cm. A little very light wear. A very good set. This rather unusual Antarctic karuta card game was published soon after the first comprehensive Japanese exploration of the continent in 1956. The activities of the exploration team was recorded on film in colour, and colour screen shots were printed for this game. Accordingly, a new set of reading cards in association with the images were written for the game. The interpretive booklet gives background to the exploration and further explanation on reading card contents. The documentary film was released on 1957. The start of the Antarctic survey by the Japanese government was big news symbolising, as it did, Japan's admission into the international community after the Pacific War. This card game provides plenty of educational content while encouraging heightened national pride. Seller Inventory # 214513
