A Narration of the Lives of the Thirteen Compilers of the Liturgy of the Church of England by S. Downes

A Narration Of The Lives Of The Thirteen Compilers Of The Liturgy Of The Church Of England By S. Downes. This volume presents concise biographies of the principal editors and compilers of the English liturgy (the Book of Common Prayer), tracing their education, ecclesiastical careers, and reforming labors during the English Reformation. Through detailed narrative, it recounts figures such as Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, and Hugh Latimer, among others, as they shape liturgical form, translate Scripture into English, and advocate doctrinal changes amid royal and papal opposition. The work interweaves personal anecdotes with institutional history, covering trials, imprisonments, burnings, and the political pressures that accompanied the dissolution of monasteries, the establishment of royal supremacy, and the enforcement of liturgical uniformity. It reflects broader religious conflicts of 16th?century England, detailing how reformers pursued doctrinal clarity, biblical accessibility, and pastoral reform, while opposing both popery and sacred innovations. The author aims to present balanced portraits of each life, highlighting their learning, virtue, and role in shaping the Church of England’s worship.
