Each volume includes an extensive index, with bibliographical notes preceding and following text, and interspersed in the form of footnotes. Leather spine and corners, pebbled cloth boards, gilt titles and rules, marbled edges and endpapers. Howes W-578: "If competently revised and brough more nearly to date, would be the most useful single work on the Western hemisphere, its history, cartography and bibliography.
