Narrative Of An Excursion From Corfu To Smyrna: Comprising A Progress Through Albania And The North Of Greece; With Some Account Of Athens. To Which Is Annexed, A Translation Of The Erastae, Of Plato by Thomas Robert Jolliffe. This travelogue records an early 19th-century journey through the Ionian Islands, Albania, Epirus, and central Greece, with chapters describing Corfu, Prevesa, Arta, Ioannina, Larissa, Delphi, Thebes, and Athens, culminating in Smyrna. The author arranges the narrative as a sequence of letters and prefatory remarks, weaving antiquarian observation, classical allusions, and social commentary into a portrait of Greece under Ottoman rule and foreign influence. The work is supplemented by a translation of Plato’s Erastae, blending travel writing with philosophy and classical scholarship. The Preface discusses preservation of a truthful first impression, and the political context of Greece in the era, including Ali Pasha’s domains and the broader Western European engagement with Greek affairs. The volume surveys landscapes, topography, temples, and ruins, while reflecting on Greece’s heroic memory and ongoing struggle for autonomy.
