Standard reference text for Major Stephen Long's second western expedition of 1823, exploring the headwaters of the Mississippi, the Red River, Lake Winnipeg, Lake of the Woods and Lake Superior. William Keating [1799-1840] served as a geologist and historiographer to the expedition. This second volume is the more scientifically distinctive of the two, which contains of extended account of the Chippewa (Ojibwa) Nation, in addition to Long's topographical report (Chapter 5), Thomas Say's Zoological Appendix (with descriptions of new species), a botanical catalogue of L.D. de Schweinitz. Also contained are astronomical and meteorological data, and the four-language comparative vocabulary of Indigenous languages (Sauk, Dakota, Chippewa, Cree), which is among the earliest of these peoples.
