Original tan paper boards, later re-backed cloth spine with printed paper label, [2], vi, 248pp, 156pp [appendix], frontispiece showing Chippewa and Wenebea peoples, 2 plates, 1 folding map and 2 folding observations, textblock toned and lightly foxed, trimmed bottom edges, boards faded, small soil on bottom front cover, corners and tips bumped, with small nicks at outer edges. Very Good. Standard reference text for Major Stephen Long's second western expedition of 1823, exploring the headwaters of the Mississippi, the Red River, Lake Winnipeg, Lake of the Woods and Lake Superior. William Keating [1799-1840] served as a geologist and historiographer to the expedition. This second volume is the more scientifically distinctive of the two, which contains of extended account of the Chippewa (Ojibwa) Nation, in addition to Long's topographical report (Chapter 5), Thomas Say's Zoological Appendix (with descriptions of new species), a botanical catalogue of L.D. de Schweinitz. Also contained are astronomical and meteorological data, and the four-language comparative vocabulary of Indigenous languages (Sauk, Dakota, Chippewa, Cree), which is among the earliest of these peoples. Approximately half of the second volume concerns the Red River Settlement and communications with Fort William on Lake Superior, mking it an early primary source on Manitoba and Western Ontario history [Field 949, Howes K-20, Sbin 37137, Wagner-Camp 26b:2, Peel 82, lande 1260, TPL (Staton & Tremaine) 1284, Pilling 2067, Gagnon 1856.
