Half-leather, lacking spine, front board detached with leather abraided in three places from a former attempt at securing with tape; rear hinge cracked but attached to chords. 70 lithograph plates, complete, 3 folding maps in rear. Plates are very clean, with only occassional soil or toning at very edges. Maps all with a closed tear from the same lower left edge, the longest 5 inches, fixed on back with filmoplast tape. Maps are otherwised clean. Text pages also clean. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; Front pastedown of detached board with bookplate of J. Gregory Smith. Inscribed on front endpaper to "Hon. J. Gregory Smith, President Northern Pacific RRC, with the sincere regards of W. S. Rowland, New York Feby 2/66." Another inscription on second free endpaper, "Col. Wm. S. Rowland, with the respect of Hazard Stevens." Isaac Ingalls Stevens was an American military officer and politician who served as governor of the Territory of Washington from 1853 to 1857, During the American Civil War he was killed at the Battle of Chantilly, while at the head of his men and carrying the fallen colors of one of his regiments against Confederate positions. His son, Hazard Stevens was the hero of the Battle of Suffolk and one of the first men to summit Mount Rainier. Seller Inventory # 11082
