Booklet, Narrative of the First English Plantation of Virginia by Thomas Hariot?, with the cover title, Hariot?s Narrative of The First Plantation of Virginia in 1585 / Printed in 1588 and 1590 / Reprinted from the Edition of 1590 with De Bry?s Engravings (London: Bernard Quaritch, 1893). Gray pebbled paper wraps; vi, 46, + pages of 23 plates and explanatory text + another five plates, and an index; 2-page map. Contains five illustrations of early natives of Great Britain. Booklet measures 6.75 x 8.5 inches. Some chipping at the lower three-quarters of an inch at the base of the perfect bound spine; some toning around the edges of the textured paper covers, o/w in VG+ condition. [GA] The section with the Virginian Indian plates is titled, The True Pictures and Fashions of the People in that Parte of America Now Called Virginia, Discovvred by Englishmen sent thither in the years of our Lorde 1585 att the special charge and direction of the Honourable Sir Walter Ralegh? Diligentlye Collected and Drawne by Ihon White? now cut in copper and first published by Theodore de Bry att his owne chardges. Bernard Quaritch did a great job in reproducing Thomas Hariot?s classic work, originally published in 1588, and subsequently in 1590 as an illustrated edition, the illustrations having been designed in Virginia in 1585 by John White. The illustrations of the Indians of Virginia are magnificent! The rear cover lists four Bernard Quaritch narratives of the Discovers of America series that were for sale, all published in 1893.
