The necessity for the laying of a theoretical foundation for work in the area of religion and literature has long been acknowledged. Why and in what ways do the elements of narrative lead easily and naturally to meanings that are religious and are of religious significance? Professor Kort’s constructive thesis is that the religious significance of modern fiction arises from possibilities within the form itself. It is because of its form that narrative has been and continues to be a ready bearer of religious meaning.
