About the Author

Lessing wurde am 22.1.1729 in Kamenz/Oberlausitz geboren. Sein Vater war Pastor. Der junge Lessing besuchte zuerst die Stadtschule in Kamenz, von 1741-1746 die F�rstenschule in Mei�en. Er studierte danach Medizin (1746-1748) und Theologie in Leipzig. Danach lebte er als freier Schriftsteller in Berlin, wo er f�r mehrere Zeitungen schrieb. Er hatte Verbindung zu verschiedenen Theatergruppen und schrieb f�r diese seine ersten St�cke. Dauernd in Geldnot nahm er in Breslau eine Stelle als Sekret�r beim General Tauentzien an (1760-1765). 1767 erhielt er eine Anstellung als Dramaturg und Kritiker am Deutschen Nationaltheater in Hamburg, 1770 eine Stelle als Bibliothekar in Wolfenb�ttel. Lessing starb am 15.2.1781 in Braunschweig.
